Masculine/Feminine Nouns

My future Spanish Scholars :-) ,

I noticed on our last exam that many of us were having trouble with Masculine and Feminine Nouns in Spanish. These nouns are very important. Here is a website that explains it in a different manner and has quizzes to help you along the way.

Remember that:

  • All nouns have a gender.
  • If the noun ends with an "a" then the gender will probably be feminine
  • If the noun ends with an "o" then the gender will probably be masculine.
"The" is translated as "EL" or "LA", these are the two words you will choose from to put into front of your noun. Again, "el" if the noun ends with an "o" indicating it is masculine. Or "la" if the noun ends with an "a" indicating it is feminine.

EXAMPLES:

  1. The flag. flag=bandera (notice that -bandera- ends with an "a") Therefore "the" would be translated as "la". The flag= La bandera.
  2. The desk. desk=escritorio (notice that -escritorio- ends in "o") Therefore "the" would be translated as "el". The desk= El escritorio.

I hope this helps a bit. Remember I will be available after school for extra help Mondays-Thursday until 3:30. =)

Bienvenidos/Welcome

As new learners of the Spanish language, you might be a bit discouraged at the beginning. Will I be able to conjugate this verb correctly? How do I pronounce this?
Don't worry! This is a new language for many of us and I will try to do my best to teach you.

  • Unit one: We will be learning the alphabet and simple words. This will take much practice and I believe the following website covers just that. Not only does it list the letters, it gives you examples and PRONOUNCES them for you!

  • Unit two: We will be learning GREETINGS. The website below is a wonderful website for this and should be used as a study guide for upcoming quizzes.
  • Unit three: We will be starting with verbs (regular 'ar', 'ir', and 'er' verbs). We will learn how to conjugate them in various forms. This will be an ongoing subject for most of the year so the following website should be of much help. It restates the rules, something you will be learning in class.
